New projects start at Center and German, Broadway and 20th South
NEW ULM — An excavator dug into the ground near the intersection of Center and German Street Wednesday as construction crews worked at replacing aging water and sanitary sewer mains.
“Things are moving along. The project began Monday,” said New Ulm City Engineer Joe Stadheim. “We’re replacing infrastructure dating back as far as 1906. Crews are cutting water valves, constructing new sanitary sewer today.”
The $2.14 million project that begun at Center Street and will progress toward 3rd North Street, is forecast to be complete sometime in October, Stadheim said.

Using local bond funds, the project includes concrete curb and gutter, pedestrian sidewalk ramps and selective replacement of concrete driveway pavement and sidewalk.
On the south end of town, Phase two of a $4.49 million project on 20th South Street project from Broadway to the Minnesota River Bridge began Monday. GM Contracting of Lake Crystal is the contractor.
The project closed 20th Street South from Broadway to the railroad tracks. Set for October completion, it includes $2.2 million in federal funds for road improvements.
Access to businesses on 20th Street South is on 19th Street South. Detour signs to businesses are posted on 19th Street South. Access to businesses south of 20th South Street is on Cottonwood and Bridge Streets.
The project consists of reconstruction of the existing water main, sanitary sewer main, sewer and water end services, storm sewer modifications and road reconstruction including concrete curb and gutter, pedestrian sidewalk ramps, bituminous recreational trail, LED street lights and selective replacement of concrete driveway pavement and sidewalk.
Phase one of the 20th South Street project from Valley Street to the Highway 14 interchange re-opened to local traffic Monday.
