Tauer Dairy to host Family Night on the Dairy Farm
HANSKA – Friday the Tauer Dairy Farm in rural Hanska will host the 2024 Family Night on the Dairy Farm.
The event is organized by the New Ulm Farm-City Hub Club and is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at the David and Angie Tauer farm, 14758 230th Avenue, Hanska.
Parking is limited on the farm, free school bus transportation will be provided from the Central Region Cooperative Parking Lot, 16074 State Hwy 257, Hanska.
Tauer Dairy is a third-generation family farm that milks 250 purebred Holsteins in a double six-parlor. The Tauers were named Brown County Farm Family of the Year in 2022.
The event is free and open to the public with all ages invited. Family Night includes farm tours, calf petting, photos with dairy princesses, additional kids’ activities, goodie bags, hayrides, educational displays, and a chance to meet a veterinarian and other dairy specialists.
The special event also includes a dairy treat line-up–all free–root beer floats, milk, yogurt, ice cream bars, and cheese sticks. For those who want more, there will be a cheeseburger meal with chips, milk, and cookies for $4. The club is offering this in cooperation with the Redwood Area Cattlemen. A maximum of 400 meals will be available.
Farm-City Hub Club member Michelle Schroder said this was the ninth Night on the Dairy Farm, but it was the first time hosted on David and Angie Tauer’s farm. The previous eight were held on Steven and Kerry Hoffman’s dairy farm. Recently the Hoffmans retired from dairy farming.
Schroder said they decided to ask the Tauer family to take on hosting duties after David and Angie attended the 2022 Night on the Dairy Farm.
“They wanted to showcase their farm,” Schroder said. “They wanted to let the public see what happens on a dairy farm.
Angie Tauer said her family’s main goal in hosting Family Night on the Farm was to connect with the community.
“We want to show people what happens on a modern dairy farm,” she said. The public can expect a modern dairy facility that includes everything from young calves to adult milking cows. There will be nutrition specialists on-site to answer questions. A machine alley will display all the equipment used on the farm. There will also be members from both New Ulm and Sleepy Eyes Future Farmers of America (FFA).
Though the Tauer Farm is primarily a dairy operation, David and Angie’s daughter Ruby has started raising chickens as an FFA project. Visitors to the farm can expect to see some poultry as well.
The Family Night on the Dairy Farm has become a popular event. Hub Club member Ruth Klossner said in 2022 they counted 985 attendees. Some of those attending came from over an hour away.
Schroder said a lot of people bring family members from outside of the community who wouldn’t normally see a dairy farm. There are also many grandparents attending with grandchildren. Grandparents are excited to show their grandchildren what they used to do.
