SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s musical director Geri Pelzel said the musical “Legally Blonde” is the perfect match for the school talent pool this fall.
St. Mary’s High School presents “Legally Blonde, The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17-18 and 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19 in the school auditorium.
Pelzel talked about why she chose the musical.
“Choosing a musical is always a daunting task. I have to look at the current talent pool, and find a story line and music that is interesting to myself, the students, and community,” said Pelzel.
“Knowing that we would be heavy on female talent this year, and that we had a great choreographer returning, ‘Legally Blonde’ seemed like a perfect fit and it certainly has proven to be just that,” Pelzel added.

“I also knew that this particular musical required a tremendous amount of sets and that Jeff Koewler was up for the challenge. I can’t imagine doing any musical other than “Legally Blonde” for this current St. Mary’s musical season – it is absolutely perfect,” said Pelzel.
“A tremendous thank you to all those who made this phenomenal production possible, especially our volunteer set builders, set painters, costume and props committee, publicity department and box office,” said Pelzel. “It takes countless hours to make this show a reality and the amount of shared time and talent is astonishing. With extremely talented actors and actresses, fantastic choreography and outstanding musical numbers such as “What You Want”, this is a show not to be missed.”
“Legally Blonde” is a 2007 musical with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin based on a book based on the novel “Legally Blonde” by Amanda Brown and the 2001 film of the same name.
The show relates the story of Elle Woods (Reese Hoffmann), a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner (McCoy Marti). She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and she successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham (Josie Helget).
Throughout the show, very few characters have faith in Elle, but she manages to surprise them when she defies expectations while staying true to herself.
The cast also includes Elle’s sorority sisters (Kylie Pelzel, Amelia Schwartz, Olivia Schieffert, Morgan Mathiowetz, Brynne Ibberson, Alexa Pelzel, Caroline Currans, Kailey Nelson, and Josie Helget), Elle’s only advocate and law teaching assistant Emmett (Charlie Hoffmann), enemy- turned-best friend Vivienne (Kiara Murphy), unethical law professor Callahan (Addie Hoffmann), hair-styling counselor Paulette (Natalie Fischer), and UPS driver and Paulette’s love interest Kyle (Kameron Kosak).
In addition, a variety of other fun and interesting characters include Elle’s fellow law student Enid (Grace Hoffmann), Paulette’s sketchy ex-husband Dewey (Jack Windschitl) and Elle’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Woods (Conner Kyllonen and Maria Schwartz).
The musical director is Rachel Moldan. Gary Sassenburg is choreographer.
Brynne Ibberson and Amelia Schwartz are the student directors. The tech crew includes Ella Pollard, Tyler Mathiowetz, Shayna Sellner, Jasmine Petermann, Jaylynn Seller and Taylor Mathiowetz.
