New Ulm canoeist’s body recovered from lake
Search continues in NW Wisconsin for second NU man
MINONG, Wis. — Searchers located and recovered the body of 26-year-old Ryan J. Busch of New Ulm Wednesday night on Minong Flowage, a small lake in northwest Wisconsin.
Search efforts continue for 27-year-old Andrew T. DeRock of New Ulm, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
“We had multiple agencies and searchers in boats on the water. I haven’t counted them all up yet. I’m going back out to search for Andrew,” said Douglas County Sheriff Matt Izzard Thursday.
Busch and DeRock went canoeing on the evening of Oct. 28. They were reported missing to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office early the next morning after family members found their capsized canoe at 12:46 a.m. Oct. 29.
A search with drones and personnel on the water including several sheriff’s and fire departments and the Wisconsin DNR, and the Superior Wis. Dive Team has continued since the men were reported missing, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The families of both missing men contacted Bruce’s Legacy of Black River Falls, Wis., a non-profit volunteer organization providing search and recovery operations for drowning victims.
The search was complicated by bitterly cold water and natural foliage in the search area, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
“The parents of Ryan and Andrew would like to take the opportunity to thank the Wascott, Wis. community, their family and friends for overwhelming support they have received,” the families said in a press release.
Two GoFundMe efforts for the Busch and DeRock families have started since the search began.
“It is said, there are some people in life that make you smile a little bigger, and encourage you to live life a little better …. Ryan was definitely that guy!,” read a GoFundMe post.
“Ryan’s love for his family, and friends has been so evident these past 5 days. Communities all over have been praying, and reminiscing about the unique gift he had in bringing people together,” continued the post.
