Little dots designed to make a pop sound popular among children

Beth Banon and Darcy Stearns look at a firework package and Maison Wendt describes it for them at TNT Fireworks. The most popular items have been the pop-its and variety packs.

NEW ULM– In anticipation for the Fourth of July festivities, TNT Fireworks has returned to town.

The large white sales tent is back at its location from the Walmart parking lot west of New Ulm.

What has changed is who operates the tent. New operators have taken over for the Miller family, who decided to retire.

Maison Wendt handles the day to day operations of the TNT Fireworks tent. This is her first year doing so, and she described what work goes into operating the stand.

“Every single night I put the product down in the (shipping) crate. And every single morning I take it back out and set it up,” Wendt said. “You don’t want to put too much out but I do have a lot still leftover in the crate. So every time that something goes out, I’ll bring something new.”

Maison Wendt sits at the checkout desk waiting to ring customers up. The tent will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot through July 5

She identified setting up the tent as the most difficult part of her job as she did it single-handedly.

“Usually it takes about four to five people for the job and I did all this by myself,” Wendt said. “Once you get it all set up it looks pretty great.”

The most popular fireworks have been their pop-its and variety packs. The pop-its are little dots designed to make a pop sound when thrown at the ground. The variety packs take a selection of individual items and put them in one convenient package.

“Everybody loves pop-its. We have a lot of stuff for children here,” Wendt said. “And the bigger items, the ones where you lean it on the big table. You want to get those because it’s all the little things put into it.”

Beth Banon went to the fireworks stand with Dawn and Darcy Stearns to prepare for their family Fourth of July celebrations. Banon remarked on the variety of fireworks now available when asked what her favorite was.

“Well, we have a few kids so we like the little sparklers for them,” Banon said “We’re not aware of all the different things that they have right now. They have such a variety of different items now that we never used to see this when we were younger.”

As for the upcoming holiday, they agreed on what they enjoy most about the festivities.

“Getting together with family, barbecue, great weather, being by the lake and just having a good time,” Banon said.

The TNT Fireworks tent will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through July 5.
