City Council approves Federal airport improvement grant

NEW ULM– City Council unanimously passed a resolution to receive a Federal grant for the New Ulm Municipal Airport towards their Airport Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project.

The grant will cover 90% of the projected $100,000 project cost, which several council members remarked as a major positive for the project as a whole. The remaining 10% will be split evenly between a future state grand and the city.

City Engineer Joseph Stadheim broke down the purpose of the rehabilitation project to the City Council.

“The project consists of reconstruction of the parking lot and entrance road at the airport along with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements for the facility.” He said.

The project falls under the city’s Airport Improvement Plan and Capital Improvement Plan, which both called for these changes to be made to meet their overall goals for the airport.

In other news, Mayor Kathleen Backer, City Council President Andrea Boettger and City Manager Chris Dalton will be attending the National League of Cities City Summit at Atlanta, Georgia on November 16-18, 2023.

City Council unanimously approved this measure, which will allow these members to take time off to attend the City Summit.

City Councilman Les Schultz gave his stamp of approval for attending this event, having attended events similar in the past and knowing the impact they can have.

“I’m just really glad you’re going.” He said. “I did so much when I go to these conferences and you’ll bring back so much stuff for staff and myself.”

The NLC’s City Summit is held every year and brings together municipal officials from every state in the country. It seeks to educate officials on the new trends and program ideas have sprung up as potential ways to improve cities for their citizens.

It also allows city officials to network and mingle, exchanging ideas and evidence of what has and has not worked for them during their times in office.
