Rec on the Go provides summer play opportunities

NEW ULM– The Rec on the Go program is providing free games, crafts, and more for the youths of New Ulm this summer.

The main activities include coloring, sports games like tennis ball golf and cornhole, and yard games like large jenga. Program director Liz Malloy also promises some special activities and guests.

“There are some days where we will do the bouncy house and water activities like a slip and slide and sprinklers.” Malloy said. “We have Miss Catherine from the public library to do children’s story-time and Pro Kinship will be coming out to lead craft activities on certain dates throughout the summer.”

The puppet wagon from years past will also be making appearances throughout the summer.

Malloy enjoys bringing outdoor play opportunities to children across New Ulm and the service this provides community members. “We hit seven different parks each week so we provide so many chances for kids to play and have fun for free.” She said.

The Rec on the Go program is staffed by volunteers like Jaylin Hartness who facilitate different activities. Hartness shared what makes the experience meaningful to her as she colored with two participants.

“I like working with the kids and getting to know everyone.” Hartness said. “We do a bunch of activities with them so it’s really fun to get to know them on a deeper level.”

Rec on the Go will run in the morning 10-11:30 a.m and the afternoon 12-1:30 p.m. The program is active from June 13-15 to August 1-3. Two parks will be visited each day.

Tuesdays Highland Park has the morning and Lincoln Park has the afternoon.

Wednesdays Riverside Park has the morning and North Park and South Park will alternate the afternoons. Activities on these days will be led by the Brown County 4-H.

Thursdays Harman Park has the morning and Washington Park has the afternoon.

Rec on the Go will also appear at German Park on Mondays during Concert in the Park from 6-7 p.m.

Plans for activities each week will be posted on the New Ulm Park and Rec Facebook. This will include special activities.
