A new parklet will go in front of Lakes on 1st Thursday, June 15. The parklet will take up one and a half of the parallel spaces.

NEW ULM– The parklet applications for Lakes on 1st and Sweet Haven Tonics were approved by New Ulm City Council on Tuesday.

The first parklet will be placed on 512 1st North Street at Lakes on 1st. It will be open for usage starting Thursday, June 15 and close October 1. Due to the parallel parking used by the business, the parklet will take up only one and a half parking spaces.

The second parklet will be placed on 116 North Minnesota Street at Sweet Haven Tonics. It will be placed Monday, June 19 and close October 31. This parklet will take up two of the businesses horizontal parking spots.

At the May 16 City Council meeting, a parklet program was approved. If an application is successful, businesses can put a small seating area within their parking space. Businesses are also be allowed to extend their liquor license to the parklet, so people can drink in the space.

The program is open to businesses along Minnesota Street from 4th North to 3rd South, as well as the side streets between Broadway and Minnesota.

Sweet Haven Tonics is also getting a new parklet Monday, June 19. The parklet will take up two spaces.

Parklets will be open until 10pm and monitored by a police officer to ensure rules are enforced and followed. Customers will be allowed to walk their drinks from the business to the parklet.

The application window is still open, so more parklets could be coming in the near future.
