CAST Senior Center has Music and Memories

Danielle Deopere sings hits from the '50s and '60s for seniors at the New Ulm Community Center

NEW ULM– Danielle Deopere sang from the heart to unlock memories at the New Ulm Community Center on Wednesday.

The CAST Senior Center held a Music and Memories event where senior community members could come and listen to classic hits. A mixture of ’50s and ’60s hits were sung throughout the hour-long event.

Artists from the ’50s included Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, and The Everly Brothers. “Their music just wants to make you sway.” One audience member said after Deopere sang “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers.

Artists from the ’60s included Chubby Checker, The Beatles, The Supremes, and The Monkees. Several audience members remembered when The Monkees appeared on The Muppets television show.

The show ended with a singalong rendition of “You Are My Sunshine”. A couple of audience members said it elicited fond memories of family members and good times from the audience.

This is the first summer Deopere is doing the Music and Memories program. She has done similar events in the past, but not a full program. Her program this summer will visit several nursing homes in New Ulm and Mankato.

When asked about the inspiration for this event, Deopere recalled her own personal experiences. “I know that when I’m listening to music, things can come back in my mind that I haven’t thought of for so long.” Deopere said. “And it’s just really great for people to activate that part of their brain and to be able to dig deep and have some memories come up.”

Deopere is also open for booking. Those who wish to have their own Music and Memories event can call 507-469-9035
