District 84 board hears class trip presentations

Oks hiring bi-lingual counselor

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye School Board heard reports from the Class of 2023 and Class of 2024 on class trips at its meeting Wednesday.

Twenty-four of 48 students in the Class of 2023 took the March trip to Orlando and Cocoa Beach, Fl. this year.

Thirty-four Class of 2024 members, 80% of the class, plan to visit Orlando and Volcano Bay Water Park March 20-24, 2024. Cost is $1,250 per student.

Seventy-one Sleepy Eye FFA members attended the state convention April 23-25 at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Fifteen Sleepy Eye teams competed with seven teams finishing in the top 10.

The school board approved action items included hiring Noemi S. Vazquez Cruz as a bi-lingual (English, Spanish) 9-12 counselor for 2023-24 @ $47,488; approved the 2024 Class trip and a shared agreement with New Ulm Public Schools for a .5 full-time equivalent art teacher for 2023-24.

Donations included $250 from Rachel Kucera for the track program, $1,00 from the Leavenworth Baseball Gambling Fund for Sleepy Eye United football, $500 from After Prom to benefit the junior-senior prom and $145.24 from School Specialty to an elementary fundraiser.

Supt. John Cselovszki said 92 K-6 students enrolled for summer school that runs from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., June 12-July 20. High school summer school numbers will be set later.

A free summer food program for children age 18 and under will be served from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 30-Aug. 4.

High school graduation is 7 p.m., Friday, May 19.
