Minnesota BCA identifies suspect killed in Cyrus shootout

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the suspect killed in a shooting that killed one law enforcement officer and injured two others in Cyrus, Minn.

Bryan Nygard, 34, of Cyrus, died from multiple gunshot wounds, the BCA said Wednesday.

The April 15 shooting killed Pope County Deputy Josh Owen. Owen was shot three times during an exchange of gunfire with Nygard at an apartment in Cyrus, the BCA said.

Owen was one of three law enforcement officers who responded to a domestic violence call in Cyrus just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the BCA said. The officers entered the apartment and spoke to Nygard and a woman, the BCA said. When officers told Nygard he was under arrest, Nygard drew a firearm and began shooting, the BCA said. Pope County Deputies Owen and Brody Merrill returned fire, the BCA said. In the exchange, all three officers and Nygard were shot.

The BCA is currently investigating the incident.

The BCA said Nygard died at the scene. Owen was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Merrill was struck once in the vest by a handgun round, and was treated and released, the BCA said. Starbuck Police Officer Alex Olson was struck once in the ankle by a handgun round. He received minor injuries and was not hospitalized, the BCA said.

Crime scene personnel recovered a pistol, bullets and cartridge casings at the scene, the BCA said. The BCA is also reviewing body camera footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
