Home show crowds warm up with the weather

NEW ULM — The 2023 Home & Health Show continued Saturday at the Civic Center and the crowds came out despite the late night snow storm.

The blizzard Friday evening made the roads coming into New Ulm hazardous, but the Saturday morning sun melted away most of the ice by late morning. All the vendors were able to return for the second day of the show. Those running the booths said the show started slow, but once the roads were clear attendance picked up.

There were a variety of home and health booths to visit. The Carlson Tillisch Eye care and Eyewear booth was located by the entrance to the show and was appropriately one of the first booths many visitors saw.

Kassie Thompson and Myra Krammer of the Carlson Tillisch clinic were helping visitors find the right eyewear. There were a lot of different trends in glasses. Krammer said the thinner metal frames were in style. Thompson said people were also embracing colorful frames.

“The most important thing with glasses is finding a pair that is a good fit,” Thompson said.

A little further down, Gag Sheet Metal (GSM) was bringing in visitors with a fun guessing game. People were asked to guess how many plastic balls were in the display dryer. The dryer was on spin, making it difficult to count the balls.

Dan Backer of GSM gave no hints on the correct count, but said children gave the most accurate guesses.

For the adults, the most popular item at the GSM booth was the induction stove. Gag said the induction range uses electromagnetism to heat cookware. The burners will not heat up unless a pan is place on top of it.

Backer said this is a huge safety feature. In the event a burner is accidentally turned on or left on, it will not heat up unless cookware is on top. Its a great feature for parents worried about children playing with the stove, or for senior citizens with memory decline.

Another benefited is the heat up and cool down time on the induction stove is quick. Even a watched pot will come to a boil in seconds.

On the opposite side of the show, Fuel Graphics had a vinyl wrapped van on display. Visitors could see the color wrap options for their vehicles, as well as other graphic options. Owner Randy Horejsi said overall it was a busy Home Show. At the start of the show, Horejsi had sticker sheets and coloring pages out for the children. By Saturday, he was out of sticker sheets. There was steady run of visitors the entire first day.

The Home Show would not be complete without a booth offering food samples. The Brown County Dairy Association laid out spread of cheese samples for visitors to sample. Angie Tauer said the most popular of the cheeses was the ranch cheddar, but the traditional sharp cheddar also a favorite.

Cutco knives had a display a few booths down run by Fonz Jenkins. He confirmed the most popular knife they sell is the cheese knife. Jenkins said the cheese knife is non-stick, which is perfect for cheeses but is versatile for other needs. Jenkins said when it comes to knives there is no one type fits all. Certain knives work better for certain situations. He compared it to shoes. A person does not wear sandals during a snowstorm or boots to the beach.

The Home & Health Show also hosted a variety of seminars Saturday, including topics ranging from travel tips and wine to eye health and back pain.
