At a January 12th varsity game, the New Ulm High School Girls Basketball Team raised and donated $1,660 to the Allina Health Foundation – New Ulm Cancer Fund. Two girls who have a very personal connection to cancer diagnosis prepared and read a speech before the game talking about how cancer has impacted them personally and society in general. Because an American dies from cancer every 52 seconds, the team had t-shirts made up in 5 different colors (blue, green, pink, orange, and gold) representing colon, liver, breast, leukemia, and childhood cancer and had “0:52” printed on them. The athletes wore them to school and for warm-ups at the game. After the speeches, 52 seconds were put on the clock and girls ran into the crowd with collection boxes. What an amazing effort to raise this amount of money, giving back to the community and a greater cause!
