Artist of the Month exhibit on display at the Grand

Art pieces created by Sarah Todesco, Margaret Gillis and Ashton McKibben hang on the Artist of the Month wall at The Grand Center for Art and Culture.
NEW ULM — The Grand Center for Arts and Culture unveiled the February Artist of the Month pieces.
This month included pieces made by Sarah Todesco, Margaret Gillis and Ashton McKibben.
Todesco, 17, is a junior at New Ulm High School. Todesco’s piece is a landscape painting featuring fantastical elements. The background and middle ground feature farm fields and a river at the base of a mountain range, while the foreground shows a woman looking into a mirror reflecting a city skyline.
In addition to painting, Todesco enjoys drawing, embroidering and photography. She also participates in musical theater as well as track and field.
Gillis is an 18-year-old senior at Cathedral High School. Her piece is a pointillism portrait project for school. Pointillism is a technique of painting tiny dots that blend into a viewer’s eye to create an image. Gillis used pointillism to create the helmet of the comic book character Iron Man.
In her artistic explanation, Gillis said learning pointillism was the purpose of the piece. Having grown up watching Iron Man was inspired to use the character to practice the technique. Pointillism was a departure for Gillis as her favorite form of art is traditional drawing.
McKibben, 14, is an 8th grader at New Ulm Middle School. McKibben’s piece is a colored pencil sketch of the fictional mascot character Hatsune Miku. The drawing is done in the anime style. McKibben’s favorite subject is art; specifically drawing.
Each month during the school year, The Grand celebrates local artists in the New Ulm schools. The three pieces will hang at The Grand for the next month for the public to view.
