NU woman accused of stealing neighbor’s truck

NEW ULM — A 50-year-old New Ulm woman is accused of stealing her neighbor’s pickup truck and allegedly hiding the key under a toilet paper roll in her bathroom.

A felony receiving stolen property charge was filed July 8 against Carri J. Odegard, 50, 11094 Shag Road, New Ulm. A court appearance was set for 8:30 a.m Aug. 9.

According to court documents, Brown County sheriff’s deputy Justin Bauer received a phone call reporting a stolen vehicle from a Shag Road residence driveway at 5:08 a.m. June 28, 2022. The caller said he could see the stolen vehicle parked in his neighbor’s (Carrie J. Odegard’s) driveway.

At the residence, Bauer saw fresh tire tracks believed to be from the stolen vehicle, leaving the victim’s property, proceeded south to Shag Road. Bauer walked to Odegard’s driveway and saw the vehicle, a black 2018 GMC Canyon, registered to a company.

At 6:08 a.m., Bauer saw a female standing near the truck and drove to the residence to make contact. At 6:29 a.m. Odegard called 911 and said she feared for her life. She later locked herself in her bedroom.

Bauer and chief deputy Jeremy Reed entered Odegard’s bedroom without damaging the door, arrested her and transported her to the New Ulm Medical Center.

Bauer remained at the residence while Reed drafted a search warrant to locate the truck keys, which were later found in bathroom under a toilet paper roll. Bauer drove the truck to the caller’s residence and he verified the keys were his. A company representative estimated the truck’s value at $29,000.

Starting at $4.50/week.
