GFW board to consider location for future school
GIBBON — A resolution for a future location for a centrally-located school building project will be considered by the Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) school board April 18.
A community facilities survey completed by 631 school district residents was discussed by the board, and no further action was taken earlier this month.
Survey results showed less than 41% of respondents favored any of several project options including a new $70 million school for all grades or a new $48-$52 million grade 5-12 school.
ISG Architects Strategy Specialist Sue Peterson suggested the board not consider a building project until a survey showed more than 50% of respondents favored it.
“I’d say pump the brakes a little bit and get more community engagement,” Peterson said.
Other issues pending before the board include:
Repairing the Winthrop bus garage roof: Superintendent Jeff Horton said the repair cost estimate is $13,000.
Replacing the gym air handler: Estimated installation date is late July. A cost estimate is not available.
Garage repairs: Replacing three Fairfax bus garage overhead doors, repair office cracks due to a settling building and repair an inoperable service door.
Miscellaneous repairs: Bids are sought for Gibbon gym rooftop air conditioning units and repairing sidewalk areas.
Interior renovation: Construction has started on the Winthrop school library collaborative learning space.
Summer school activities: Plans include a literature camp and math activities.
The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 18, in the Gibbon Early Childhood Room.
