NEW ULM — Washington Learning Center (WLC) hosted kindergarten registration Thursday.

Dawn Brown said 140 families have signed up for the event. The registration will be spread out over five sections a day through Friday.

This year’s registration was special because the event was held outside. Five stations were set up around the WLC including registration, sidewalk art, story time, music and physical education.

The registration even is designed to give families of sampling of what kids will learn at WLC. Recently, the school has put an emphasis on outdoor learning. Part of this was a necessity of COVID-19 but teachers are finding the outdoor events provides additional stimulation for the young learners.

Brown said the school tries to get the students outside often in a variety of weather to educate and prepare them.

The registration was the class of 2034 first exposure to school. The school is anticipating a relatively large class. Brown said the registration numbers for next year were slightly higher than normal for April. Additional students are expected to register before the start of next year.
