Granite Falls reports 8.5 inches of snow

Granite Falls reported 8 1/2 inches of snow from the last 24 hours Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Seven and one-half inches of snow was measured a mile northeast of Redwood Falls and 7.7 inches in Glencoe. Following that were Arlington six and one half inches, 6.2 inches five miles south of Fairfax, 6 inches in Winthrop, 5.8 inches in Marshall and Olivia, 5.2 inches in St. Peter, 4.9 inches three miles east, southeast of New Ulm and four inches in St. James.

Tuesday’s snow fall was the largest early season storm ever recorded in Minnesota. Records go back about 140 years. The snow was also the second-largest October snowball, second only to the 1991 Halloween blizzard.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported more than 1,100 crashes and spinouts on state roads, but no fatalities Tuesday.
