MADELIA — A fundraiser on behalf of the mother of a 19-year-old Madelia teen who suffered a severe spinal cord injury at Lake Hanska Aug. 19 drew 60 golfers and more than 100 silent auction donations to the Madelia Golf Course Saturday.

“It’s overwhelming and amazing how our community pulled together for this,” said Jennifer Anderson, the mother of Logan Anderson, who is being treated at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Neb.

Madelia High School football, basketball and baseball coach Jeff VanHee organized the event with help from a good friend of Logan Anderson, Courtney Davis of Madelia.

Anderson was injured when he jumped from a pontoon boat into shallow lake water last month.

He was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital with help from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Hanska First Responders, Madelia Ambulance and North Memorial Air Care.

He is receiving daily therapy at the hospital that habilitates patients who have suffered stroke, spinal cord injuries, have complex medical issues or other conditions and traumatic events.

Madelia Police and Fire Departments and Madelia Ambulance Service escorted Anderson through Madelia on his way to Madonna Hospital Sept. 10.

In Nebraska, doctors fused Anderson’s C5 vertebrae fracture, VanHee wrote on Anderson’s GoFundMe site.

“We are all sending love and prayers to Logan,” VanHee wrote. “We’re praying that his being young, strong and resilient will help him defy the odds. Logan and his family will all need emotional and financial support for the long road ahead.”

“Logan was always a tremendous competitor, a player and teammate everyone loved to have on our side,” VanHee wrote. “I’m one of many people trying to do whatever we can to help our Logan and his family. Please help by making any donation to this great kid!”

Jenny Anderson said Logan undergoes therapy up to three hours a day in Nebraska.

“He has no movement in his legs and toes but he has feeling,” Jenny Anderson said. “He’s working on strengthening himself. He is able to play cards since he has some movement in his wrist. He stays upbeat and positive. He’s very sociable.”

Jenny said she was able to stay with Logan around the clock in September.

“Logan is off pain meds for the most part and has occasional pain in his arm,” Jenny wrote on the GoFundMe site. “A few days ago, he ate a banana after it was put in his hand. He is able to move his arms, sometimes his fingers. He seems determined and realizes what he needs to do. We continue to be so grateful for all prayers, messages and help. Our family, friends and community have been amazing.”

Jenny said Logan is interested in playing wheelchair basketball.

“Logan loves athletics and weightlifting,” Jenny said. “He was planning to join the U.S Marines and was taking tests for it. He was working full-time on a hog farm.”

As of Sunday, Logan Anderson’s GoFundMe site raised $15,227 with a $150,000 goal.
