Spring plants fundraiser

Members of the New Ulm United Soccer Club stand among the thousands of plants set to be delivered as part of their spring fundraiser.

NEW ULM — The plants for New Ulm United Soccer Club’s fundraiser arrived Wednesday evening.

Club members and volunteers helped unload 15 garden carts from a delivery truck and sort the plants for delivery. The spring fundraiser is an annual tradition for the club.

New Ulm United Soccer Club President Michael Shaneman said even though the summer season was canceled, the soccer families were hard at work.

The fundraiser will help cover the cost of field maintenance and possibly purchasing new field space. Shaneman said the club wants to be proactive in preparing for next year since this year was canceled.

“We’re taking sour grapes and making wine,” he said.

The chair of the fundraising committee Amber Schaefer said this was one of the better fundraisers; especially since plants were sold during a pandemic. This year 1,115 plants were sold to 156 customers. There were over 85 varieties of plants to choose from. Volunteers will deliver the plants once they are organized for distribution.
