NEW ULM — Friday was Trevor Roth’s 8th birthday and his family was able to hold a big drive by birthday. While waiting on in a lawn chair on Bridge Street, friends and family drove passed dropping off gifts and other goodies for Trevor. Members of the New Ulm Police even drove and flashed their sirens to celebrate the occasion. Trevor was excited with the birthday celebration. His favorite gifts were Pokemon cards and a rubber snake. Here, he blows out the candles on his cake.

NEW ULM — Teachers at St. Paul’s Lutheran School and Washington Learning Center in New Ulm reached out to parents and students as the year of online learning continues.
Washington LC teachers Jill Berdan, Kristy Forst and Shelly Nelson were on the road delivering May Day baskets and balloons to students in Eagles Pre-school.
The teachers were able to deliver 27 baskets in Lafayette, Klossner, Hanska and New Ulm. It was a chance to make a connection with the students and their families amid the shutdown of the schools and a chance for the youngest students to see their teachers again.
Berdan said with the school’s shutdown through the rest of the year, the teachers will likely make another home visits within two weeks.
Next week is Teacher’s Appreciation Week, but with students no longer in class the teachers at St. Paul’s flipped the script and showed their appreciation for parents who have become part-time teachers during COVID-19.

Teacher Sue Schone and event coordinator Sarah Zahrt handed out mugs of appreciation to parents as they drove into St. Paul’s parking lot to pick up next week’s educational packet.
Schone said the parents usually do something for the teachers this week so it was an appropriate change.
“It is a thank you to them for being good teachers,” she said.
