NEW ULM -- Hy-Vee Inc. announced that as of today customers will no longer be allowed to bring in reusable bags until further notice.
The company said the change was made because it is difficult to monitor the cleanliness of reusable bags because it is not always easy to know the sanitization procedures customers take at their homes, according to a news release.
Customers will also begin seeing temporary window panels installed at store checkouts to help provide an additional layer of protection for employees and customers.
"The spread of this virus is asking us all to take extraordinary measures and change the way we live our lives," said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee chairman, CEO and president. "We are continuing to adapt at Hy-Vee so that we can serve our customers and keep everyone in our stores as safe and healthy as possible."
The New Ulm Hy-Vee kitchen deli continues to offer to-go meals including pre-made sandwiches.
The Backerei & Coffee Shop urges customers to order rolls the day before they pick them up.
"We encourage people to order ahead of time for more roll choices," said Backerei owner Amanda Hacker. "Carry-out is going pretty good, pretty steady."
Cash Wise Deli Bakery Assistant Manager Cheryl MacFarlane said carry-out and delivery business remains "pretty good."
New Ulm Country Club Cottonwood Grill manager Tim Huffman said carry-out business is "all right." He has hopes of opening the golf course before too long.
The Green Mill Restaurant and Bar continues to offer carry-out and delivery. "We're doing pretty well," said Green Mill General Manager Tina Scharnberg Quinn.
Lamplighter General Manager Becky Portner urged customers to follow the establishment's Facebook page. The business offered homemade kraut and dumplings and homemade chicken noodle soup, curbside take-out from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
"Business is down a bit, but we're still happy. People can come in for carry-out, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.," said owner Lacey Lueth.
Papa Murphy's Pizza Assistant Manager Kelsey DeGre said they are limiting their lobby to four people. She encouraged online orders.
Pizza Ranch Guest Service Manager Leslie Siefkes said customers can call in or make online orders.
Plaza Garibaldi offers carry-out with curb-side pickup and delivery.
Sippet Coffee & Bagels owner Aaron Bode said drive-through business has picked up quite a bit this week.
"It's a struggle, hard for everybody, but we are cautiously optimistic," said Sozial Restaurant & Bar owner Jeff Overby. The establishment offers carry-out or curb-side pickup.
A number of downtown New Ulm stores remain open including Inspired, Gallery 512 Boutique, Bailey Creek Boutique, and the Thimble Box. Several business owners and said business has slowed down but not stopped. A couple stores reduced hours.
