Closures, Cancellations Due to COVID-19 Concerns

The following is a list of canceled events and closures due to concerns for the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The list will be updated as The Journal is notified of events.

BROWN COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

The Brown County Humane Society Shelter is closed to the public until further notice due to COVID concerns. We will continue with adoptions through individual, scheduled appointments. Applications to adopt must be completed and submitted prior to scheduling an appointment to meet the pet. Applications can be found at bchsnu.com.

MINNESOTA VALLEY FUNERAL HOME

The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home annual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, has been cancelled.

SENIOR CONGREGATE DINING

New Ulm Senior Congregate Dining is closed, however diners may call 507-359-2243 to order a meal for curb side pick up or they may have the meal delivered with our Meals on Wheels driving teams. They may also order frozen meals for use on the weekend or during the week.

DAV MEETING

The Disabled American Veterans meeting scheduled for March 24 has been canceled.

COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS

The Compassionate Friends monthly meeting scheduled for March 30 has been canceled.

GRAND CENTER FOR ARTS & CULTURE

The Grand Center for Arts & Culture has cancelled all events and shows at least through April 11. The Kiddo Sho art show closed as of Wednesday, March 18. Parents should send an email to The Grand to arrange for art pick up (grand@thegrandnewulm.com) or call 507-359-9222.

LAUNDRY LOVE

The Laundry Love event scheduled for March 24 has been canceled.

ST. GEORGE DINNER THEATER

Performances of “Pecos Bill and Slue-Foot Sue Meet the Dirty Dan Gang” has been postponed and rescheduled for May 16.

UCC COMMUNITY DINNER

The United Church of Christ’s monthly community dinner, scheduled for March 25, has been canceled.

AG DAY PARADE

The Ag Day Parade, scheduled for March 24 in New Ulm, has been canceled.

UNITED WAY OF BROWN COUNTY AREA

Below is a list of the March Programs that The United Way of Brown County Area is canceling due to COVID 19 and Social Distancing recommendations:

Free Tax Preparation Program

This program will be suspended through the rest of March 2020. We hope to have the program continue in April 2020, but will inform the public as we get updates. If you have questions about a current or future appointment, please contact the Tax Preparation program at: 1-507-276-3186

Screenagers Public Programs

The United Way has decided to cancel the three following public programs below: We are working on a later date to hold this important program in each of the communities listed below.

Springfield Public Library-March 19.

Sleepy Eye Public Library-March 26.

New Ulm Public Library-March 31.

Welcoming Communities

The New Ulm, Sleepy and Springfield Welcoming Communities March 26 meeting at the Sleepy Eye Event center will be canceled. At this time we are planning to hold our April 23rd meeting as scheduled at the Sleepy Eye Event Center from 5:30-9 p.m.

The New Ulm Municipal Band has postponed its first rehearsal of the season, scheduled for March 31. The group will reassess on a weekly basis after that.

NEIGHBORS IN CHRIST CHURCH SERVICES

Due to health concerns and possible spread of COVID19 virus, the Neighbors in Christ Parish Council has decided to cancel worship services for Sundays March 22nd and 29th, 2020. Additionally, midweek Lenten Services and fellowship meals have also been canceled. These cancellations include all church activities including Bible Studies and Confirmation through April 1st.

FIELDS OF GRACE LUTHERAN

All Fields of Grace Lutheran Church activities are canceled through April 9 (Maundy Thursday.)

DIOCESE OF NEW ULM

The Diocese of New Ulm has suspended all public masses until at least March 31. All Catholics are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday masses.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, NEW ULM

St. John’s Lutheran is canceling services through the end of March.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, Springfield

St. Johns Lutheran Church of Springfield has cancelled all worship services and church activities through March 29. Tune in to the church website for live streaming of all worship services/Sunday school lesson at www.sjlcspringfieldmn.org.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, SLEEPY EYE

All Trinity Lutheran Church activities are canceled for the month of March.

INDEPENDENT FILM “SILO”

Screenings of the independent film “Silo,” arranged by the Brown, Nicollet and Sibley County Farm Bureaus, the Sibley East and New Ulm FFA Chapters, and the Farm-City Hub Club have been postponed. New screening dates will be determined and announced at a future time.

ROTARY CLUB

The New Ulm Rotary Club will not meet during the month of March, and its Scholarship Banquet scheduled for March 23 has been canceled.

MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE

MLC is extending Spring Break until Sunday, March 22. Starting March 23, all classes will be conducted via distance learning methods, intending to resume classroom instruction on April 14 after Easter break. Re-evaluation will continue and any further decisions will be made by April 8.

The MLC campus will only be open to faculty, staff, international students, local student teachers, and other students with extenuating circumstances. All MLC-sponsored and hosted events on and off our campus, will be canceled until April 13. This includes athletic events, music events, admissions visits, etc. Below is a list of canceled events that were to be held on the MLC campus.

March 28 – Men of Truth Conference

April 3-4 – Suzuki Workshop and concert

April 4-5 – Summit Avenue Music Series workshop and concert

TWO RIVERS COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

The Two Rivers Community Orchestra has postponed its inaugural concert, set for March 21 at the State Street Theater Co. A new concert date will be announced as soon as it is set.

STATE STREET THEATER

State Street Theater is adjusting its concerts and plays to new dates. “The Johnny Cash Story” concert set for Friday, April 3 is rescheduled for Friday, June 26 at 7 p.m., contingent on the coronavirus. The play, “Over the River and Through the Woods,” set for April 17-19, will be rescheduled at a date to be determined. All pre-purchased passes and tickets will be valid at the rescheduled times and dates. Updates will be posted on its website, www.statestreetNEWULM.org. State Street Theater. NEW ULM/SLEEPY EYE HOCKEY SAUERKRAUT & LANDJAEGER DINNER

Originally scheduled for March 22, has been postponed and will be held at a date to be determined. Please save your tickets.

NEW ULM CITY BUILDINGS

Effective Monday, March 16 at 11 a.m., the following City Buildings will be closed through at least March 29:

Recreation Center, 122 S Garden Street

Civic Center, 1212 N Franklin Street

New Ulm Public Library, 17 N Broadway

The New Ulm Community Center, 600 N German will close today, March 16 at the conclusion of the congregate meals. Going forward, LSS will be preparing meals for shut-ins, but there will be NO congregate meals. Please call 359-2243 to reserve and pick up a meal.

Following the CDC and Department of Health recommendations and guidelines, city programs will be canceled. Pre-registered participants will be contacted.

Participants registered for the 2020 Weight Loss Challenge may do their weigh outs by calling 507-359-8344 when they arrive at the Rec Center to gain access. The end of program celebration and health fairs associated with this program have been canceled.

All library events are canceled through March 29. Library patrons should keep all library materials until the library reopens. No overdue fines will be assessed.

Outside facility reservations for these City Buildings will be canceled through at least March 29.

The city will continue to communicate with the public via Facebook, The Journal and KNUJ.

SPRINGFIELD LIBRARY

As of Wednesday, March 18, the Springfield Public Library will be CLOSED until further notice. Books can still be returned to the library drop box. All books will automatically be renewed twice. No fees will be incurred on books while the library remains closed. We ask that all movies be returned on or before their due date to avoid any fees.
