Hunting for bargains

A GnomeMade sign welcomes Shopping Opener shoppers to Schoolhouse 186.

NEW ULM — The GnomeMade Market is open for business Friday and will run through Sunday, Nov. 10.

The annual art and folk art market is a New Ulm tradition dating back 35 years. The tradition started as a shopping event to coincide with the Minnesota DNR Deer Hunting Season. It is part of the local Shopping Opener throughout New Ulm for the Christmas season.

This year, the GnomeMade Market has 19 different shopping locations spread around New Ulm. Maps of participating businesses are located at the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce.

Of the new stops on the GnomeMade is School House 186, located at 26147 County Road 12. The new shop is a collaboration between seven crafts supplers from all across Minnesota.

Another new addition to the shopping opener is Bumbelou, the latest boutique store on Minnesota Street. Bumble is located in the former location of Jacobs & Meidl music store. The new shop is a children’s boutique offering clothing for kids zero to seven, toys, games, books and accessories. The first Bumbelou store opened in Mankato.

Owner Jenna Odegard said she named her clothing brand after her daughter Lexi Lou. As a young child, Lexi would like to pretend to be a bumblebee. The name as a combination of bumble and Lou. It even includes a bee-stripe paint scheme.

Friday was the first-day Bumbelou was open. Odegard said they saw a steady flow of customers all day. She said the most popular item with customers were the children’s books.

Odegard said she selected which books were on the shelves.

“Customers at our Mankato store know they can trust our book,” she said.

The GnomeMade Market will not slow down tomorrow. Most of the same shops will be open on Saturday and some will stay open on Sunday.

The Women’s Expo and Craft Fair is a Saturday only event. It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Jefferson Elementary. Women’s Expo brings in exhibitors from across the state.
