Sleepy Eye, NU, Hanska, Comfrey firefighters battle fire

SLEEPY EYE — Fire departments from Sleepy Eye, New Ulm, Hanska and Comfrey responded to a barn fire at the James Krienke farm near the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Brown County Road 10 Saturday morning.

Sleepy Eye Fire Chief Ron Zinniel said the fire call came in at 6:45 a.m. He said a former turkey barn used for miscellaneous storage was on ablaze when fire fighters arrived. Sleepy Eye Fire Department equipment used at the scene included a pumper, tanker, rescue unit, grass rig and aerial bucket truck.

“We called for mutual aid,” Zinniel said. “New Ulm supplied a tanker and pumper truck while Hanska and Comfrey Fire Departments each brought tanker trucks.”

Zinniel said about 50,000 gallons of water was used to contain the fire to one barn. He said nobody was hurt and described fire damage to the barn as a total loss. Zinniel said firefighters spend about four hours at the scene.
