NEW ULM — The Brown County 4-H Swine show was once again one of the largest livestock show at the free fair.

Dozens of exhibitors brought swine to the competition with multiple weight classes in several of the divisions.

The Crossbred Market Barrow division had the most exhibitors with 21 swine entered across six weight classes. Purebred Market Barrow was the second-largest division, featuring 17 swine in four classes.

This year was a strong showing for Molly Carnell of the Comfrey Comets. Her swine took home several of the top prizes including Champion Market Gilt, Champion Breeding Gilt, Champion Pen of Three, Campion Senior Showperson and Reserve Champion Barrow.

Carnell said her secret was to walk with the pigs every day and get them used to the whip.

Carnell is a veteran of the 4-H program. This was her 13th and last year showing swine at the 4-H show. She will attend University at St. Cloud.

Aubree Schmidt, 11, also had a great day with swine. She took the Champion Barrow ribbon and Junior Champion showperson. Schmidt said in showing a pig she always tries to take at the judge and keep the pigs head up, which can be a challenge as the animal tires. Schmidt said she was fortunate to have a cooperative pig. Her Champion Barrow was named after Minnesota Viking Everson Griffen.

Other honors went to Kiera Lafferty for Champion Intermediate Showperson. Mallory Drake received Reserve Champion Market Gilt and Reserve Champion Pen of Three. Haily Green was Reserve Champion Breeding Gilt.
