Planning Commission OKs permit, plats for woodworking business

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Planning Commission unanimously approved an interim use permit application to allow the operation of a woodworking business on North Broadway Thursday.

Approval came on a motion by commissioner Mike Furth, seconded by Rodney Karnitz. Harold Enamorado of New Ulm owns Cala Contemporary Woodwork in his residence and in a detached garage at 718 N. Broadway.

Enamorado said most of his business is done online with customers in Minneapolis, where he works as an interior design architect. His equipment includes a dust collection system with a half-horsepower motor. He is allowed signage not to exceed two square feet in the R-2 zoned residential area.

His company specializes in handmade furniture made of wood and metal, creating pieces based on his own designs and from custom orders for commercial and residential customers.

“I used water-based paint and rollers. I may add a paint booth in the future,” Enamorado said. “We have twin babies, so if somebody complains about noise, it’s my wife.”

The application will be considered by the New Ulm City Council that meets at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 2.

The commission unanimously approved:

• The final plat of Oak Bluffs Eighth Addition, motion by commissioner Jeff Gulden, seconded by Dena Piotter. The plat includes 11.93 acres of land on 6th North Street owned by the Diocese of New Ulm, east of Highland Avenue.

• The final plat of Palmer Addition, motion by commissioner Rodney Karnitz, seconded by commissioner Gulden. The City of New Ulm is the applicant for 31.24 acres of land from 2000 to 2250 Palmer Avenue, south of U.S. Highway 14, north of the New Ulm airport.

The property will be used by the Minnesota National Guard to build a field maintenance shop in 2020 and a readiness center in 2023.
