Special city council meeting to deal with Shaneman appointment

NEW ULM — The appointment of Audra Shaneman as economic development director/assistant city manager will be considered at a special New Ulm City Council meeting at 8 a.m. Monday, June 24.

Shaneman’s appointment came before the council during their regular meeting Tuesday, June 18, but it was tabled.

Shaneman’s appointment was recommended by the city’s Personnel Committee, and councilors Lisa Fischer and Les Schultz were prepared to appoint Shaneman, but councilors David Christian and Larry Mack wanted to table until the full council could attend. Council President Charlie Schmitz was on vacation during the regular meeting.

Both Christian and Mack had received calls regarding Shaneman’s appointment and had additional questions about the personal committee’s selection process.

If the council appoints Shaneman at their next meeting, she will be the second economic development director/assistant city manager the city has appointed in 14 months.

Former economic development director/assistant city manager Chris Dalton was hired in April 2018. In November he became acting city manager with the departure of former city manager Brian Gramentz.

Dalton was formally appointed as permanent city manager in April 2019, and the city began the search for a new economic development director/assistant city manager.

Shaneman served as the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce president from 2011 to 2019. In April, she began working for Greater Mankato Growth as the City Center Partnership director.
