Sweet rolls go to Washington

Staff photo by Fritz Busch Sweet Spot Bake Shop owners Tina Castillo and Robert Meyer of Fairfax pose with a box of rolls they sent to Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar’s Washington, D.C. office on UPS Next Day Air Tuesday. Klobuchar’s office staff wanted to find a Minnesota bakery to provide sweets for the Minnesota Morning Breakfast event in Washington and found the Sweet Spot Bake Shop on Facebook and ordered the sweet rolls.

FAIRFAX — Sweet Spot Bakery owners Tina Castillo and Robert Meyer got up between 3:30 and 4 a.m. to go to work on the east main street Tuesday, like they usually do, to get ready for an unusual customer order.

They put a couple dozen muffins, scones and rolls including blueberry, double chocolate and cranberry orange muffins, scones (English cake made of flour, butter and milk) with raspberries, white chocolate and blueberries, maple rolls and moca bars.

The box of sweets was picked up by UPS (United Parcel Service), transported to Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport and flown to Washington D.C.

Castillo recently talked to Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s office staffer Rachel Martinez who found the Sweet Spot Bake Shop’s Facebook site, liked what she saw and called the bakery to order a couple dozen sweets for Thursday’s Minnesota Morning breakfast.

The event designed as an opportunity for all Minnesotans visiting Washington, D.C. to meet with Klobuchar, hear a first-hand account of her work on behalf of Minnesota in the U.S. Senate, mix and mingle with fellow Minnesotans, talk to her staff and take photos with Klobuchar in her office in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

The usual Minnesota Morning fare is coffee, wild rice bread and potica, a Slovenian pastry more common on the Minnesota Iron Range and served at all Klobuchar family gatherings.

“Every once in a while, we get a different type of order, but nothing like this before. I added a variety of different toppings,” Castillo said as locals met over coffee and sweets at the bakery. A string of customers came to the bakery counter as the morning rolled on.

Bakery operation often means short nights.

Castillo said she and Meyer often get up very early in the morning to start packing orders. Most of the the sweets are transported to about 15 nearby grocery and convenience stories in Fairfax, Morgan, and Hector.

This week’s Donut of the Week is a sugar overload donut. Last week, it was Banana Cream Bismarks. Bird’s Nest (raised cream) Bismarks are another favorite. A variety of cookies, angel food cakes and cupcakes are also popular. Sometimes the bakery has pumpernickel bread available.

Located at 127 S.E. First Street, the bakery’s business hours are 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
