The program is an integrated health care model that allows patients to see their family medicine provider in partnership with obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs) within Mayo Clinic Health System during pregnancy and delivery.

Patients can see Schmitt and Vogel for regular monthly appointments during pregnancy and visit an OB-GYN at their pregnancy midpoint. The OB-GYN takes over care after 35 weeks of pregnancy. Sonal Grover, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato OB-GYN, visits Springfield monthly. Or patients may choose to see an OB-GYN at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.

“I have had an interest in OB-GYN for quite a while. My past professional experience includes a lot of labor and delivery nursing,” says Vogel. “My past experience also includes serving as an OB educator and lactation specialist.”

Schmitt says her background also includes labor and delivery experience.

“It rounds out the whole of family practice when you see patients as their families grow,” says Schmitt.

As family medicine providers, Schmitt and Vogel help care for people of all ages with preventive treatment and illness evaluation, including newborn care.

Vogel earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, New York. She later received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice for Family Nurse Practitioner from South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic Health System, Vogel worked as a nursing educator at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Worthington, Minnesota.

Schmitt received her training from Walden University in Minneapolis. She is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Before her career at Mayo Clinic Health System, Schmitt worked for eight years in the Cardiology department at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale before moving back home to work at the Springfield Hospital.

Schmitt says her professional interests include cardiology, pediatrics and prenatal care, as well as sports medicine and anticoagulation. Vogel says her professional interests include women’s health, lactation counseling, chronic disease management, and allergy and asthma.
