Sleepy Eye man gets stay of imposition

NEW ULM — A 23-year-old Sleepy Eye man received a stay of imposition in Brown County District Court Monday for selling 14.4 grams of methamphetamine to a Brown-Lyon-Redwood Renville County Drug Task Force (DTF) undercover agent on Jan. 30, 2018 in Sleepy Eye.

Justino Alvarez Jr., 208 Elm St. N.W., Sleepy Eye, was ordered to serve up to 25 years on probation; fined $2,485; sentenced to 60 days in jail; given credit for seven days served; given work release privileges; and ordered to to 40 hours Sentence to Service (STS), which he may do while in jail. In addition, he may enter Drug Court if accepted.

Deputy Brown County Attorney Paul Gunderson said he would recommend Alvarez participate in Drug Court.

According to court documents, Alvarez was directed by a confidential informant (CD) and undercover agent (UC) to a Sleepy Eye home. He arrived at the home in a vehicle registered to a female but appeared to have a male driver.

The agent, fitted with a recording device, overhead a deal to buy half an ounce of methamphetamine for $400 from Alvarez. After the deal was made, the UC gave the agent a clear plastic container with a crystal-like substance that weighed 14.4 grams and later field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
