Veterans Day, formally known as Armistice Day, marked the end of the First World War, which ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Hoffmann’s rendition of Taps began at 11 a.m. exactly Sunday, Nov. 11. Many government offices remained closed Monday out of continued respect.
