NU woman faces assault charges

NEW ULM — A 28-year-old New Ulm woman was charged with domestic assault with a dangerous in Brown County District Court Monday.

Porshia S. Furlow, 2406 N. Broadway, was released on her own recognizance with conditions including continuing to cooperative with a therapist for mental health concerns. Her unconditional bail was set at $45,000. Furlow said she was the mother of three young children and voiced repentance.

“If I’m going to get another chance, this experience has taught me I need to get on my A game. I have a great support system,” Furlow said.

The victim said he didn’t feel his life was in danger from Furlow.

According to court documents, New Ulm Police were dispatched at 6:37 a.m. Friday to an assault with a knife. The female who stabbed a man was inside an apartment with the knife, and the man was outside waiting to talk with law enforcement.

Police talked with the alleged victim while his girlfriend, Furlow, was yelling at him from a second story apartment. The man said she slashed his tires and pointed to his vehicle, a gold 1999 GMC Jimmy. Police noticed two flat tires on the vehicle. Police learned during a previous visit that the vehicle was owned by the man and woman.

Police asked the victim what happened. He lifted up his shirt, showed a half-inch stab wound in his chest and said Furlow “poked” him with a kitchen knife. In addition, the victim said Furlow kept him in a bedroom for two or three hours and did not allow him to leave.

Furlow was originally charged with false imprisonment and intentional restraint. That charge was dismissed Monday for lack of probable cause, pending further investigation.

The victim later said the incident was more of an accident and that Furlow bit his lip during the scuffle. Police noticed a small mark on the inside of his lip, which was photographed.

Furlow told police she was upset because the victim didn’t pay any of the bills and was throwing his pocket knife at her dartboard upstairs, so she took it from him. She said he tried to take the knife from her and she was cut on her finger. She exposed a small wound but did not allow police to photograph it.

Furlow admitted to “poking” the victim and showed police a kitchen knife in the sink that she said she used to “poke” him with.

The victim repeatedly asked police not to arrest Furlow. Police said she was already arrested.

Police photographed both knives and took them into evidence. There was a small speckle of blood on a folding knife. It appeared the kitchen knife was wiped off.

Police told Furlow she was under arrest, transported her to the Brown County Jail and signed her in.

Furlow was convicted of domestic assault on Aug. 19, 2011, in Shiawasee County, Michigan. A hearing was set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 9.
