Schmidt wins Open Class Market Hog Show

Staff photo by Fritz Busch Aubree Schmidt, 10, rural New Ulm, poses with “Dale,” a Duroc Barrow pig that helped her win the Overall Market Hog and Champion Market Barrow awards at the Brown County Fair Open Class Market Hog Show Friday.

NEW ULM — Ten-year-old Aubree Schmidt of rural New Ulm and the Milford 4-H Club won the Open Class Market Hog Show, receiving the Overall Market and Champion Market Barrow awards Friday.

It means Schmidt wins another trip to the Minnesota State Fair. She’s been to the state fair every year since she was born.

“He’s curious and pretty easy to raise,” Schmidt said.

Like most pige, Aubree’s hog “Dale” was sleeping in his pen in the hog barn when she walked into the pen and tried to rouse him. Moving him didn’t get him up, but once some food was placed in the trough, he sprang to life and created a better photographic opportunity.

She said she enjoys showing cows and pigs raised on the family farm. She is active in volleyball, basketball and softball in school.

Olivia Schieffert won the Champion Market Guilt Award. Mary Drake was Reserve Champion for Market Guilts and Barrows.
