SE City Council OKs City Office renovation

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved a resolution approving a low bid to renovate the City Office building and add a new roof July 30.

The $713,500 low bid from Salience Concrete & Construction of Springfield was approved on a motion by Doug Pelzel, second by Dick Zinniel. The bid includes $689,700 for base bid construction and $23,800 for a new city hall roof.

Other base bids with roof construction were Brennan Companies $752,000; Mohs Contracting $784,000; Heymann Construction $788,750; and Met Con Companies $793,900.

The two-floor project that will add a six-car tandem garage just north of the existing council chambers and 6,000 square foot police station where the former off-sale liquor formerly existed. The new police station main floor will include a Police Chief’s office, interview, conference, report and break rooms, and a Child Protective Services office. The basement includes rooms for active cases/narcotics, weapons storage, cleaning and evidence.

City Manager Mark Kober said the project could be paid for in cash but he suggested some of the money be borrowed. Project windows are not yet designed. Kober said a $10,000 OSHA grant could be applied for.

Oleson & Hobbie Architect Brad Schonborn of Mankato said contractors are interested in doing construction work this fall.

Mayor Wayne Pelzel said there are parties interested in buying the Sleepy Eye Community Center for business purposes.

Kober said the City has not yet received a formal proposal, but if he gets one, he will bring it before the Sleepy Eye City Council.

It was decided to hold the August city council meeting on Thursday, Aug. 16, since Tuesday, Aug. 14 is Primary Election Night.
