NEW ULM — A new day camp has grown out of the ongoing work of the Musical Tales Concerto project.

Kids ages 10-18 will have a chance to learn about nature and storytelling this August. For $45 they can participate in the Growing Wise science and music theater day camp.

“The goal would be to give this age level not only the support as far as story telling but also how an effective collaboration works,” Director/Educator Anita Prestidge said. “There are a lot of opportunities for gifted individuals to explore their own craft and I think the difference with Mike’s (Composer Peter Michael von der Nahmer) project is that it is really focused on collaboration.”

The four-day camp runs Aug. 1-2, takes a break over the weekend then continues Aug. 6 and 7.

Starting at 9 a.m. each day, kids will spend the morning exploring the native species of Flandrau State Park with Regional Ecologist Megan Benage.

After lunch, they will spend a few hours working on group projects with von der Nahmer and Anita Prestidge.

Campers will be able to choose from creating a short film, writing a short music-theater production, creating an audio collage or creating a short audio play with original music.

The projects will be based on what kids experience during the morning explorations of Flandrau.

Ultimately the kids should learn how to turn their own experiences into storytelling as well as how to collaborate on projects.

“It is different from teamwork,” Prestidge said. “I have been on a lot of teams and I would say the difference with the team is that everyone is focused on their strengths whereas in a collaboration, it is not just a matter of taking into account someone’s weakness but also seeing what you can do to help them with that weakness so that their strengths can become greater and thereby making the project stronger.”
