SSTC celebrates new piano with concert

NEW ULM — The State Street Theater Company (SSTC) recently acquired a 1960’s Baldwin Grand piano and held a concert Sunday to celebrate.

The concert was called “Making Life Grand” and featured the talents of ten local pianists performing everything from Johannes Brahms and Irving Berling to Lorie Line and Scott Joplin.

SSTC Board of Directors Vice President Brenda Nielsen said they don’t make pianos like this anymore and its a great oppertunity for the theater.

“It has a really bright tone,” Nieslen said describing the piano’s sound. “It makes it good for playing all types of music.”

The concert was organized to show the range available on the piano. The pieces performed included classical and jazz competitions.

Overall, the piano is in great condition. The previous owner was musican living in Mankato and kept it in good condition.

Nielsen said a piano tuner checked the instrument before the concert and confirmed it was in perfect working order.

The piano was purchased through a special grant SSTC received. The piano will be used for a variety concerts and theatrical performances.

This grand piano has been on the SSTC wish list for some time.

The concert celebrating the piano was free to the public, but SSTC was accepting free will donations to replace the theater’s sound system. The sound system is the next item on the theater’s wish list. The current sound system is approximately 50 years old and due for tune-up.

Starting at $4.50/week.
