Madelia man,19, killed in reported home invasion; homeowner charged

WATONWAN COUNTY — A 19-year-old Madelia man is dead and the person who called in a report of a home invasion Saturday morning has been arrested on manslaughter charges, the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday afternoon.
Nicolas Thomas Embertson, 19, of Madelia, was identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner as the person who died Saturday after the reported home invasion.
The person who called in the report has been arrested and booked into the Watonwan County Jail, pending charges of Second Degree Manslaughter and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm . Formal charges are expected to be filed after review by the Watonwan County Attorney’s office. The Journal does not name suspects until charges have been filed.
Shortly after 7 a.m. on Saturday, the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible home invasion involving a firearm in Fieldon Township, near Madelia. While en-route to the scene a deputy came across a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident.
The deputy stopped the vehicle and found two injured people. The Madelia Ambulance was dispatched to the scene and both injured people were taken to the hospital in Madelia. One of the injured persons, later identified as Embertson, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other injured person was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office would not comment on the nature of their injuries.
Deputies then went to the scene of the reported home invasion on 850th Avenue in Watonwan County and spoke with the home-owner who made the initial report. They secured scene and the incident is being investigated by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the Watonwan Count Sheriff’s Office.
Watonwan Chief Deputy Jeremy Nachreiner said his department is still waiting for an official report on the cause of death for Embertson and could not provide any information on the name or status of the other injured person.
The case remains under investigation by the Minnesota BCA and the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office. Watonwan County will release additional information about victims and subjects involved in the case at a later date.
