Council to hear recommendation on 14th and Franklin St. intersection
NEW ULM – The New Ulm City Council will hear a recommendation from the Safety Commission to establish a three-way stop control at the intersection of 14th North and Franklin Streets.
During the Aug. 11 meeting of the Safety Commission a request was discussed from Independent School District 88 Superintendent Jeff Bertrang to establish the three-way stop control.
The school district has physically updated the former Washington Elementary School into the Washington Learning Center, which included a redesign for the parent drop-off traffic pattern. The three-way stop control at this intersection would provide additional safety for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the intersection.
In other business, a public hearing will be set to approve the final assessment rolls for the 2014 MSAS Improvement project. The total amount recommended to be specially assessed is $127,591.46 of the estimated $2,760,465.22 project.
The Council will consider authorizing a notice of intent to apply for The Big Jump Project bicycling network grant from People ForBikes organization. The Park and Rec Commission recommended the authorization during their last meeting.
This grant would provided three years of technical assistance from the PeopleForBikes organization. The organization will help develop best practices in changing habits and fostering a culture where it’s ordinary to ride bikes.
Hermannfest is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2016 and the city council is expected to approve several actions related to the celebration; specifically the discharge of fireworks, music, cannon fire, food and beverages served in Hermann and Harman Park. Hermannfest has been celebrated in New Ulm for the past three years and has been deemed successful. The council has previously authorized $15,000 of funding in the 2016 budget to cover the cost of fireworks discharged.
