Proposed final projects for local sales tax received

NEW ULM – The wish list is complete.

The deadline for final project proposals that could be financed with the reauthorization of the local one-half cent sales tax expired Tuesday.

The RENU committee received 13 potential projects that could be funded through a local tax.

The projects are:

n Purchase of 30 acres of land to relocate the Minnesota Army National Guard Field Maintenance Shop and Battalion Headquarters Armory. Estimated cost is $1.1 million.

n Advancement of industrial development in New Ulm through the purchasing and development of 22 acres of property on the west edge of the Airport Industrial Park. Estimated cost is $2.7 million.

n Airport Improvements including crosswind runway, security fencing, development of additional hangers. The estimated cost is $1.1 million.

n Intersection Improvement at Center Street/CSAH 13 and Garden Street to reduce conflicts at this intersection through development of roundabout and/or pedestrian tunnel crossing. The estimated cost is $2.5 million.

n Intersection improvements at North Highland Avenue and U.S. Highway 14 to reduce conflicts at intersection through roundabout or traffic signal. The signal is estimated to cost $400,000, and the roundabout is estimated at $2.5 million

n Railroad crossing safety improvements to the main line railroad crossing with warning signal and crossing gates. The total cost for all crossings is $900,000.

n Storm water drainage improvements at Somsen Slough area through construction of a storm sewer network. The project is estimated at $7.2 million.

n New Ulm Turnverein and NUAGA propose building a gymnastic facility for athletes of New Ulm and surrounding areas. The total estimate is $5.9 million.

n Civic Center addition including multi-purpose rooms, storage space, team rooms and fitness and training spaces. Total cost is estimated at $1.5 million.

n Hermann Heights Park Infrastructure Improvements including realignment of park entrance road, establishment of parking lots, accessibility addition and improvements including sidewalks/walkways. The estimated cost is $750,000.

n Johnson Park grandstand improvements including reconstruction of main entrance, new concessions and other replacements. Total cost is estimated at $1.2 million.

n Recreation Center expansion including aquatic center renovations and water park additions, multi-purpose turf field house, and indoor playground and wellness center. The total estimate for all three expansions is $12 million.

n State Street Theater renovation including new seating, restroom renovation, elevator, orchestra pit and a catering kitchen. The first phase of renovation is estimated at $1 million.

The RENU Committee will begin reviewing the projects and will recommend specific proposals to the City Council on or before June 7.
