Venezuela says 3,000 released

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s National Assembly says thousands of people have regained freedom under a new amnesty law. A special commission reported Tuesday that more than 3,200 people have been fully released since the law took effect four days earlier. Commission leader Jorge Arreaza says authorities have received over 4,200 applications and that most of the releases involve people under house arrest or other restrictions. Rights group Foro Penal said Tuesday it had only verified 91 political releases and said nearly 600 people remain detained.
