Turkmenistanlegalizes crypto mining
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) — Turkmenistan has officially legalized mining and exchanging cryptocurrency, marking a major shift for its tightly-controlled economy. Signed on Thursday by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the legislation brings cryptocurrencies under civil law and establishes a licensing scheme for exchanges overseen by the central bank. However, digital currencies won’t be recognized as payment, currency, or security. Turkmenistan’s economy heavily relies on exporting natural gas, mainly to China.
