Protests erupt in Iran over currency’s plunge
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran is seeing its biggest protests in three years after the currency plunged to a record low against the dollar. The Central Bank governor resigned on Monday. Demonstrations broke out in Tehran and other cities as traders and shopkeepers rallied. Police used tear gas in some areas of the capital. The protests are the largest since the death of a young woman in police custody in 2022 after her arrest for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly. The latest plummet of Iran’s rial currency is worsening inflation and straining budgets. Reports of increased taxes and economic uncertainty have fueled concerns.
