Strong earthquake in central Philippines kills at least 6 people

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — An offshore earthquake of magnitude 6.9 has jolted the central Philippines and collapsed the walls of buildings, killing at least six people. The quake late Tuesday also injured several other people and sent residents scrambling out of homes into darkness as the intense shaking cut off power. The earthquake was centered about 17 kilometers northeast of Bogo, a coastal city of about 90,000 people in Cebu province. Firefighter Rey Cañete said the damaged concrete walls of houses, a fire station and concrete and asphalt roads in Bogo. Alfie Reynes, the vice mayor of the town of San Remigio, south of Bogo, says six people were killed there, though he didn’t elaborate on how they died.

Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda charge toward Bermuda as the island prepares

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday as it approached the tiny British territory, with newly formed Hurricane Imelda following closely behind. A hurricane warning was in effect for the island in the north Atlantic as forecasters advised of dangerous seas, strong winds and heavy rain. Humberto was located about 300 miles west of Bermuda. The Category 1 storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and was moving north-northwest at 18 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Humberto was a Category 4 storm on Monday, but was quickly losing strength and was forecast to dissipate by Wednesday.
