Russian glide bomb attack in eastern Ukraine kills at least 24
DONETSK REGION, Ukraine (AP) — Officials say a Russian glide bomb has struck a village in eastern Ukraine as people stood in line in the open air to collect their monthly pension. Authorities say the blast Tuesday killed at least 24 people and injured 19 others. The bomb hit the Donetsk region village of Yarova at around 11 a.m. local time, authorities said. The village lies less than 6 miles from the front line. It was the latest Russian attack to kill civilians. More than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the three-year war, the United Nations says. With U.S.-led peace efforts making no headway in recent months, Russia has escalated its aerial barrages of Ukraine.
Israeli strike in Qatar targets Hamas leaders as they weigh Gaza ceasefire proposal
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel launched a strike targeting Hamas’ leadership in Qatar as they considered a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Tuesday’s strike on the territory of a U.S. ally marked a stunning escalation and risked upending talks aimed at winding down the war and freeing hostages. Qatar, which has served as a key mediator between Israel and Hamas, condemned the “flagrant violation of all international laws and norms” as smoke rose over its capital, Doha. Hamas said in a statement that its top leaders survived the strike but that five lower-level members were killed, including the son of Hamas’ leader for Gaza. The White House described the attack as an ‘unfortunate incident’ that didn’t advance peace in region.
Protests against Nepal’s social-media ban grow more violent
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Protests against Nepal’s short-lived ban on social media grew increasingly violent as demonstrators set government buildings and politicians’ homes on fire and attacked some leaders. The prime minister resigned amid widening criticism of the country’s political elite. The resignation on Tuesday appeared to have little effect on the unrest. Tens of thousands of protesters remained on the streets late in the day, blocking roads and storming government facilities. Army helicopters ferried some ministers to safe places. A day earlier, demonstrations led by young people angry about the blocking of several social media sites gripped the capital, and police opened fire on the crowds, killing 19 people. The ban was lifted Tuesday, but the protests continued.
At least 60 people killed in a rebel attack on funeral ceremony in eastern Congo
GOMA, Congo (AP) — Rebels in eastern Congo affiliated with the Islamic State group have killed at least 60 people in an attack. The Allied Democratic Force carried out the attack in Ntoyo, North Kivu, after residents gathered at a burial. A local official reported the death toll, noting that services have been deployed to count the victims. The region faces complex conflicts, including increased attacks by the ADF, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in 2019. Despite joint operations by Congo and Uganda, the ADF continues to attack civilians, worsening the plight of Congolese in the eastern region.
