12 people injured in stabbing at Hamburg train station, authorities say

BERLIN (AP) — An assailant stabbed people at the central railway station in the German city of Hamburg on Friday, injuring 12 people — six of them critically, authorities said. The person attacked people with a knife on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 in the station, according to police. Hamburg’s fire service said that six people sustained life-threatening injuries, while another three were seriously injured and three had slight injuries, German news agency dpa reported.

Russia and Ukraine swap hundreds of prisoners in first phase of a major exchange

CHERNIHIV REGION, Ukraine (AP) — Russia and Ukraine began a major prisoner exchange, swapping hundreds of soldiers and civilians in the first phase of an exchange that was a moment of cooperation in otherwise failed efforts to reach a ceasefire in the 3-year-old war. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the first phase of the exchange brought home 390 Ukrainians, including soldiers and civilians, with further releases expected over the weekend that will make it the largest swap of the war. Russia said it had received the same number from Ukraine. Kyiv and Moscow agreed in Istanbul last week to the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side in their first direct peace talks since the early weeks of Russia’s 2022 invasion.

At least 60 people killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza as Israel lets minimal aid in

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Gaza’s health ministry says at least 60 people were killed by Israeli strikes in a 24-hour period as Israel pressed ahead with its military offensive and let in minimal aid to the strip. The dead included 10 overnight in the southern city of Khan Younis, four in the central town of Deir al-Balah and nine in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the north. Israel is facing mounting international criticism for its latest offensive and pressure to let aid into Gaza amid a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The strip has been under an Israeli blockade for nearly three months, according to the United Nations. Experts have warned that many of Gaza’s 2 million residents are at high risk of famine.

Iran-US talks made ‘some but not conclusive progress,’ mediator Oman says

ROME (AP) — Mediator Oman says Iran and the United States made “some but not conclusive progress” in a fifth round of negotiations in Rome over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. The remarks by Badr al-Busaidi Friday suggest the negotiations between the two longtime enemies would continue even as the talks run up against their toughest challenge. That’s trying to find middle ground between American demands that Iran stop enriching uranium while Tehran insists its program must continue. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that al-Busaidi presented ideas “without creating any commitments for either side.”
