Russian attacks during Easter ceasefire killed 3 in Ukraine’s Kherson region
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The head of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region says that Russian attacks during the 30-hour Easter ceasefire unilaterally declared by President Vladimir Putin over the weekend killed three people in the region. Kherson’s administration head also reported Monday that three others were wounded. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram statement that Russia violated the ceasefire overall more than 2,900 times. Putin announced a temporary Easter truce on Saturday. Ukraine said it would reciprocate any genuine ceasefire by Moscow but voiced skepticism over the Kremlin’s intentions. Both sides traded accusations of violations shortly after. Russia said that its forces “strictly observed the ceasefire” and accused Ukraine of violating it 4,900 times.
China warns countries against making trade deals with the US unfavorable to Beijing
BEIJING (AP) — China is warning other countries against making trade deals with the United States to China’s detriment. Governments including those of Taiwan, Japan and South Korea have begun negotiations with Washington after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs against most of America’s trading partners on April 2. The import taxes were mostly paused after markets panicked, but he increased his already steep tariffs against China. The Commerce Ministry said Monday that China “firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests” and China would retaliate if that happened. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier the countries currently negotiating trade deals with the U.S. should “approach China as a group” together with Washington.
Sudan’s paramilitaries kill more than 30 in a new attack on a Darfur city, activists say
CAIRO (AP) — A Sudanese activist group says the notorious paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have attacked a city in the western Darfur region, killing more than 30 people. It says the RSF attack on el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur province, on Sunday also wounded dozens of people. El-Fasher is under the control of the military, which has fought the RSF since Sudan descended into civil war more than two years ago. The RSF has been attempting to seize el-Fasher since the 2024 spring to complete its control of the entire Darfur region.
US airstrikes killed 12 people in Yemen’s capital, the Houthi rebels say
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. airstrikes targeting Yemen’s capital killed 12 people and wounded 34 others, the Houthi rebels said early Monday. The deaths mark the latest in America’s intensified campaign of strikes targeting the rebels. The U.S. military’s Central Command declined to answer questions about the strike or discuss civilian casualties from its campaign. The Houthis described the strike as hitting the Farwa neighborhood market in Sanaa’s Shuub district. That area has been targeted before by the Americans. Strikes overnight into Monday also hit other areas of the country.
