Court Proceedings

Brown County District Court

• Two gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI charges and misdemeanor driver must carry proof of insurance when operating vehicle and open bottle possession charges were filed June 27 against Kenneth C. Sanz, Ceylon.

According to the complaint, Minnesota state trooper Karl Hendrickson was dispatched to a personal injury crash in Sleepy Eye on June 24. Sleepy Eye police officer Amber Wieland was the first to arrive on scene. She earlier got a driving complaint related to a small black car in the ditch near Sleepy Eye Golf Club. A couple of minutes later, a crash occurred.

Hendrickson was told the driver of the black Hyundai was very intoxicated and was taken to Sleepy Eye Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver was later identified as Kenneth C. Sanz, who rear-ended a vehicle, then tried to back up and hit a semi truck.

Hendrickson found a half-empty vodka bottle in the car. He later found out there was no insurance on the car. Sanz admitted to having four vodka drinks. He displayed intoxication clues. A preliminary breath test registered a .248 alcohol content.

Sanz was arrested for DUI. A blood sample was drawn to be sent for analysis. He was discharged from the hospital and transported to detox in New Ulm. He was later released from detox with no hold on him. A court appearance was set for 8:30 a.m. July 19.
