Court Proceedings

Brown County District Court

• First- and second-degree burglary, felony threats of violence, two counts of gross misdemeanor harassment and misdemeanor disorderly conduct and theft charges were filed April 12 against Shane A. Peterson, 35, 825 Maple St. S.W., Sleepy Eye. Bail without conditions was set at $100,000.

A companion case including a petition for judicial commitment was filed March 31. He is currently under civil commitment as mentally ill. A Jarvis hearing — for patients who may have mental health disabilities to be treated with antipsychotic medicine without their consent — was set for May 5.

According to court documents, a man called Sleepy Eye Police at 2:36 p.m. April 11, 2022 reporting Peterson entered his residence without permission when only his children and grandchild were home.

Police went to Peterson’s residence. Chief Matt Andres activated his body camera before entering, and Peterson was outside. Andres asked Peterson what he was doing at the victim’s residence and was told he just wanted to get his basketball from the victim’s house and that he didn’t break in.

Andres told Peterson he was under arrest. After 30 to 40 minutes, he got into a squad car, in what police described as a “manic” (restless) state.

Earlier in the day, officers assisted Peterson’s social worker to ensure he was attended his videoconference court hearing related to a commitment. The Sleepy Eye librarian called police because Peterson caused issues in the library and there were concerns.

Officers took Peterson to his residence to attend court. Peterson threatened to kill an adult male whom he earlier accused of robbing him. Peterson later said he would break the man’s fingers.

At the victim’s residence, a police investigator was told by witnesses that Peterson walked into their residence, later stole a dumbbell and mop.

Police were told Peterson showed up at their residence at 2 a.m. the previous morning, knocked on the door but did not enter.

The investigator returned to Peterson’s residence and saw a dumbbell in his front yard and photographed it.
