‘Anastasia’ musical combines ‘emotion’ and ‘passion’

WINTHROP — T-Bird Community Arts of Gibbon, Fairfax and Winthrop presents the musical “Anastasia” July 31-Aug 3 in the GFW High School auditorium.

Set in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, the musical “Anastacia” follows Anya, a brave and mysterious orphan with no memory of her past, who may be the long-lost Anastasia.

The the help of two con men–Dmitry and Vlad–she sets out from Soviet Russia to Paris in hopes of reuniting her family and uncovering the truth about who she really is.

Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a Dmitry and Vlad on her epic adventure.

Along the way, she faces danger, romance, and the haunting question: What if she is the real Anastasia?

Anastasia transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of 1920s Paris.

Featuring iconic songs from the animated film like “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” along with new numbers written for the stage, Anastasia is a dazzling, emotional, and hopeful tale of love, family, and finding home.

Cast members include Elissa Ries as Anya, Tommy Krueger as Dmitry, Derek Helget as Vladimir Popov, Gwen Ruff as The Doweger Empress, Scott Trebelhorn at Gleb Vaganov, Isabelle Vos at Lily, Sam Gatton as Count Leopold, ensemble; Eli Molash as Gorlinsky, ensemble; Jeremy Lederle as Count Gregory, ensemble; Desi Schmidt as Countess Gregory, ensemble; Mitchell Ibarra as Count Ipoltov, ensemble; and more. Joe Vos is directing the musical.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. July 31-Aug. 2 and 2 p.m. Aug. 3.

Ibarra and Tyler Aden said they enjoyed the dancing in the musical.

“I like the singing,” said James Slossen.

“I like the emotion and passion of the musical,” said Caidyn Suess.

“It’s a really good musical. I think lots of people will enjoy the music, some of which they are probably familiar with. It’s really fun to do this musical,” said Gwen Ruff.

“The cast has been fantasic. The collaboration between our veteran actors and actresses and newcomes has been empowering to watch. I also have a fantastic production crew,” said director Joe Vos.
